October is dedicated to celebrating fair trade.

To mark the occasion, here are the five fair trade certified foods I put in my basket every week—along with the logos to look for!

When I was younger, I was fortunate to learn at school about the importance of choosing fair trade certified foods at the grocery store to support an economy that fairly compensates its producers and workers. Since then, I always check product labels to spot the right logos and make conscious choices!

Logos to look for

The many labels on our favourite product packaging can be confusing when trying to find the right information. When it comes to fair trade, there are a few certified logos to look for to ensure you’re choosing the right products—and for the right reasons.

Fairtrade

Fairtrade:

A key badge of authenticity that guarantees a base wage for producers and workers. This certification system is 50% governed by producers and promotes decent working conditions, bans child labor, and pays close attention to environmental impact. It also sets minimum prices for goods based on region, helping ensure stable and viable incomes in vulnerable markets.

Ecocert

Ecocert:

A historic player in organic agriculture certification, Ecocert is known for its independence, expertise, and impartiality. You’ll find this logo on various products, including cocoa and Equifruit bananas.

Some teas are also Fairtrade certified, like those from Quebec-based brand Four O’Clock, known for its wide variety of blends. A perfect option for a comforting hot cup or a refreshing iced tea pitcher in summer.

Cocoa

Fairtrade certified chocolate now holds a strong presence on store shelves. Brands like Camino offer chocolate bars, baking cocoa, hot chocolate mixes, and even chocolate chips.

Coconut milk

Fair trade coconut milk, such as that from Cha’s, is ideal for enhancing curries and other flavorful dishes.

Fair trade bananas, like those from Equifruit, are widely available in grocery stores. Organic and Fairtrade certified, they stand out for their quality and taste—while remaining very affordable.
